In mid-November I presented my research at the USC Vocal Forum. In my presentation I focused on the implications of the health benefits of singing for developing a group singing program designed for caregivers of cancer patients. It was entitled “Singing as Caretaker of Cancer Caregivers” and was well-received by attendees. Below is a summary of the paper:

Besides the social benefits of group singing, the physical and psychological benefits of group singing have been studied. These benefits include reduction of cortisol, a stress hormone, increased levels of oxytocin, and enhanced lung health. The privilege of group singing should not only enrich the lives of singers in schools, community choirs and professional groups but also of those who are experiencing high levels of stress and have not sung in choirs. Among these groups are the caregivers of cancer patients. As family members, medical professionals of cancer patients, they may undergo significant mental and physical exhaustion. In fact, several studies have demonstrated the benefits of group singing among cancer caregivers. I will endeavor to expand upon the positive research patterns of the physical and psychological benefits of group singing for caregivers of cancer patients by reviewing the literature and setting the foundation for a future project. The project involves working with cancer centers in hospitals to create singing groups that benefit the caregivers.

Professor Lynn Helding provided unending support during my research!
